Mill Valley streets are a total disgrace. If you drive around in an SUV, perhaps you haven't noticed the significant deterioration of our roads. I ride a bike every day to Sausalito where I have a studio. The condition of the bike lanes is beyond bad, they are outright dangerous. Putting "Share the Road" stencils doesn't help much when the road is full of potholes. Statistics show that the more bike riders there are, the safer the riding. What parent in their right mind would push their kids out the door to ride in our streets? Do any of our elected leaders actually ride a bike? I would suggest that you get out of your car and start riding a bike. You will see very quickly how dangerous it is. Biking is a fantastic exercise and is utilized to a much greater extent in European cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen. If you ride a bike to work or for pleasure, you will start getting the exercise you need to live a healthy life which will reduce your personal need for health care. That is if you don't get clobbered by a bus, car, or cement truck. Automobile drivers are oblivious to bikers' needs and often confrontational. Allowing 3 feet to pass is a good start for drivers. If you cannot pass safely, then show some patience. Bikers are out there getting exercise while drivers are sitting on their butts. My proposal is to eliminate a car lane on Miller, eliminate half the parking spaces, and focus on making Miller a fantastic street for pedestrians and bikers. This would encourage people to bike more and our society benefits from lower rates of obesity. I am not riding today due to a neck injury sustained when a Shamrock cement truck ran me off of Miller Ave and into a ditch where I flipped over.
